“A broader perspective to continue to monitor society effectively…”

Reading time 3 minutes

To see people clearly, that’s what voluntary work is all about...

Dear reader,

In the Netherlands and also at international level, needs persist. In our own country, unfortunately more people struggle to make ends meet, with limited to no funds to buy decent meals. This is today’s harsh reality for many members of our society. The Netherlands Red Cross therefore distributes breakfast bags to families, offering supermarket vouchers to those who have none to turn to. This way nobody is abandoned in times of need. Internationally, our aid workers have provided day and night support to the victims of the severe earthquake in Syria and Turkey. Colleagues on the Caribbean islands are also doing their maximum to support the people who need our help the most. In The + of, volunteer Louis Williams shares his experiences in the sunshine of St. Eustatius.
In the Netherlands, we have recently assessed the need among refugees at 19 of our locations. This is to map out what people really need. By listening, we are better able to offer effective support. Read about the findings in Story in numbers. Attention and understanding are also pivotal when it comes to the interventions of the Netherlands Red Cross. In At the table, we answer the question as to whether it is really easier to really see the help seekers and understand their needs if one shares the same refugee background. Careful attention, understanding and really seeing one another, it is crucial each time we reach out. In The Portraits series, volunteer Harm-Jan shares his experiences within the Peer Support Team.
Our aid workers are on the front line every single day. They experience situations up close and know exactly what is going on. To see people clearly, that's what voluntary work is all about. Our volunteers make it possible for the Netherlands Red Cross to remain well connected to society. Thanks to your broad perspective, we can assist others as best as we can.

Enjoy the reading!
