How to use the Red Cross emblem?

The iconic Red Cross symbol can now be seen at every event and disaster area, but this sign cannot be used by just anyone. The humanitarian law team explains when and how the symbol may be used, because the emblem cannot be used just like that. What is the difference between the emblem and the sign and how can you use the emblem to make yourself visible at a location? To answer those questions, we have listed the most important information about the red cross of the Red Cross for you to read.

Protectors of our emblems

This may sound odd, but the Red Cross sign is not property of the Netherlands Red Cross. The way the well-known apple, for example, belongs to Apple, or the yellow-red shell to Shell itself. The red cross is no commercial mark. The thing about the emblem is that it is a sign that offers protection in an armed conflict. It says: Don't shoot! The emblem therefore warns that persons, vehicles and buildings are part of humanitarian aid that are protected by international humanitarian law. This means that the sign itself is also protected by the humanitarian law team, and therefore should not be used just like that. Only the medical service of the Armed Forces may depict the emblem in peacetime as well. In addition to the Red Cross emblem, there are two more equivalent signs with the same meaning and protective feature. In the Netherlands, we have opted for the red cross, other countries have a red crescent moon instead or the red crystal as a symbol for our humanitarian organisation.

The difference between the Red Cross and the logo

The difference between the emblem and logo is all about the context of use, our organisation must also be identifiable for its work in peacetime. This is to show, for example, where we have a first aid post at an event or to be identified as a first-aid officer in your Red Cross clothing. International agreements have been made about this. As a result, we may use the Red Cross emblem on a small scale and only in combination with our official name in order to be identified as the Netherlands Red Cross. We refer to the combination of the emblem with the name of the organisation as the logo.

Restricted use

We can therefore use the Red Cross sign modestly in order to be identifiable. We are not allowed to simply attach the emblem to vehicles, clothing, products or buildings. So, if you were planning to treat everyone to a Lederhose printed with red crosses for a company party, unfortunately you will be disappointed. Only employees are allowed to use the symbol at work by making it visible in their work clothes. Restrictions may seem strict, but this is how we make sure our iconic sign retains its value and is only seen as a symbol of help and protection.
