“You are the unique person who helps others and sometimes even saves lives”

Reading time 3 minutes

Dear Red Cross volunteer,

The work of Red Cross aid workers worldwide is not without risk. At the beginning of June, we were shocked by a terrible report from Mali. Our colleague Maboury Diouf, working for the Netherlands Red Cross in the African country, was killed together with his colleague Mahadi Sow of the Malian Red Cross during an armed robbery on their way back from a field visit.

An appalling act, because violence against aid workers can never be justified. Protected by our globally recognised emblem - which means don't shoot - Maboury and Mahadi were determined to help others. On that day, the meaning of our emblem was disregarded and the aid workers died.

The Red Cross helps everyone. Far away and close by. That is what makes us unique. For many volunteers it is a reason to join our organisation. We help people regardless of their religion, background or origin. That this is an important value for many volunteers became clear when we were ready to help refugees from Ukraine.

As a Red Cross volunteer you gain unique experiences in a unique organisation and environment. More importantly: you are the unique person who helps others and sometimes even saves lives.

I wish you a pleasant summer and an enjoyable read!
