“When we make space to learn, the whole organisation improves”

Learning means staying on your toes
Dear reader,
2022 was a special year in which the Red Cross was able to help thousands of people in need. We did this with food aid, COVID-19 assistance, sheltering people who had fled, and psychosocial support, among other things. Also on the other side of our kingdom, on the Caribbean islands, Red Cross volunteers went all out last year to provide assistance to the most vulnerable households. Great accomplishments were achieved. In short: 2022 is a year we should be proud of what we did together for the people who needed our help the most.
It was also a year of learning and reflection. We reflected on how we can continue to improve as a growing organisation. In At the table with, we discuss how the Red Cross can be a learning and transparent organisation, where people aren’t afraid to speak to each other and name integrity issues. At the same time, we see that our volunteers are increasingly subject to higher demands. Also in Quesions, we talk about what it is like to learn as a volunteer.
In the Netherlands and internationally, we were ready day and night for people in need. This also brought extra pressure on the organisation, staff, volunteers and Ready2Helpers. In a year when the pressure on our organisation was high, we also took the time to reflect, evaluate and learn. When we do that, the whole organisation improves.
Whichever way you look at it; a lot is happening. You - volunteers, Ready2Helpers and staff - are always putting yourself out there for others. A big compliment and heartfelt ‘Thank you’ is therefore in order.
Enjoy reading and wishing you a beautiful and healthy 2023.
